This week, the 7th grade has had a lot of things going on as a class! In science, we spent time reviewing mitosis before diving into the topics of cloning and cancer. Both of these topics applied our understanding of how cells replicate to form new cells. The idea of cloning is interesting and offers a lot of opportunities to discuss the "what if..." aspect of applying this process to other mammals besides sheep, and why people want to clone other people. Cancer is a part of our fallen world through sin, and the understanding of how a cell can get "stuck" in mitosis to create tumors which can spread throughout the body, while intriguing, doesn't help us answer the question of how to cure it....though I believe we will have a scientific breakthrough as God's people continue to use their talents in these fields! In Religion we have been discussing God's Word, and what it means for us as His children. The topics of Law and Gospel predominated our class talks. We have also been prepping for Reformation and All Saints' Day, which are next week Wednesday, and Thursday, by singing some awesome Reformation and All Saints' hymns. The 7th grade's favorite has been Thy Strong Word (Hymn 578). Health class is continuing to learn about the muscles in our body. Next week we will be quizzing on the posterior muscles. We decorated our door for fall, and it turned out amazing! Thanks for the help 7th grade! Today, Friday, we helped get the church and school ready for Trunk or Treat, and we had our fall party. Students decorated cookies, created paper plate faces (pumpkin or otherwise) to hang on their lockers, and had a mini-dance party. We had a ton of fun! Thank you to those of you who have sent in donations for our All Saints Fest Yard Work Project. I will be turning these into gift cards for our class donation. If you are able to send in a donation ($10 - 20) before next Friday, that would be great, this will only add to the ASF winner's experience. All Saints' Fest You have your ticket. What a week! We had our last days of entrepreneurs selling their items Monday, and Tuesday, then the 5th and 6th graders left for outdoor ed on Wednesday, so it was pretty quiet. Thursday, well, Thursday was a great field trip to the Ark Encounter, minus the traffic issues on the way there, and then again on the way back. I hope the chaperones and students came away with a renewed sense of awe in regards to what our God can do!
We wrapped up our religion focus on Answers in Genesis with a video on DNA, which was a little technical, but still relevant to the discussion of how to respond to people who tell us that evolution is the only answer. In science we quizzed on identifying the stages of the cell cycle. A couple people needed to redo their quiz, and we will revisit this again after break for another opportunity to strengthen our understanding of the cell cycle. For health we are continuing on in our study of the muscular system, and we will have a quiz on a few of the muscles found on the front side (anterior) of our bodies. Choice class will be held for a final time after break to wrap up our mini-economy. Thank you to those of you who have sent in donations for our All Saints Fest Yard Work Project. I will be turning these into gift cards for our class donation. If you are able to send in a donation ($10 - 20) after break, that would be great, this will only add to the ASF winner's experience. Each grade also contributes handmade items for the auction. You will certainly want to bid on something that your child has helped to make! As in the past, mobil bidding is available during the event using your own smart device. The night usually raises in excess of $30,000! It is great to see the students start to think critically about these life skills. This week's lesson for mini-economy included the ideas of taxes, investments, and what happens when unexpected things happen to you.
Science is focusing on cell replication: Mitosis. We looked at onion root tip slides to see the different stages of the cell cycle. Religion class is focusing on how science can confirm what we read about in the Bible. Health class is focusing on the muscular system, and we will be quizzing on the two kinds of muscle, the three types of muscle tissues, and where to find them in the body. The 7-uppers put on a fantastic play about the Indian caste system yesterday! They worked really hard to learn and prepare for their parts. The 8th grade watched them perform and asked follow up questions. Great job! Papers coming home with your student: School pictures Memo about All Saints' Fest (please send in your contribution by Friday, Oct 12th.)
