This week in the middle school, some our students really stood out as they sought out opportunities to provide services in an attempt to earn mini-economy money for their start up costs. Many of the other staff and faculty commented to the middle school teachers that they thoroughly enjoyed the student helpers, and they wondered if we could keep it going all year! Way to go guys!
Our mini-economy choice class went very well today. The students were introduced to the concept of creating and maintaining a budget, writing checks to pay bills, and the temptation to spend rather than save became a challenge as the entrepreneurs began selling in our market. Congrats to Ryan and Landon who had a great market day! The cell projects were AMAZING! This year's projects are some of my favorites. Well done 7-uppers. In religion we have started a series from Answers Academy about defending our faith in light of our society's objection to biblical truth. We are hearing about how our starting point from the bible allows us to see the history found there is confirmed through observational science. We will be continuing the Answers Academy over the next two weeks in preparation for our trip to the Ark Encounter. This week we had a great time at Lutheran High School, playing Rock-Paper-Scissors War in gym, and starting band practices.
We are beginning a new choice session and our time will be spent on creating and simulating a mini-society. Today we were introduced to the idea, applied for jobs, and started planning. In science we will be quizzing on parts of the cell Tuesday, September 25th. We started constructing our cells for science today! The project will be due Friday, September 28th, and will consist of partners creating a model of either a plant or animal cell. Some class time will be devoted to this project, but not all the days between now and the due date. Students have a project sheet in their science folder that details the requirements. A health quiz on skin issues will be Wednesday, next week. We have completed our Unit on Prayer in religion. We ended the unit with writing a prayer for two different classmates, expressing the blessings we hope God will bestow on them. This exercise is something I encourage the students do as a "random act of kindness" activity each week, which can be anonymous. There will be a take home "quiz" given to the students Monday. Midterm ends today! Electronic progress reports will be sent out no later than Sunday evening. Thank you for signing up for your conference, and for responding to the pre-conference questionnaire! Let me know if you need the link again for either of these thing. I look forward to meeting with you next Monday and Tuesday. We have had some great conversations during religion about prayer and what it means to be God's children. In science we have learned about all the parts of a typical prokaryote, animal cell, and plant cell. The project for this concept will be due Friday, September 28th, and will consist of partners creating a model of either a plant or animal cell. Some class time will be devoted to this project, but not all the days between now and the due date. Students have a project sheet in their science folder that details the requirements. Band starts today! As a former band student, I am very excited to see band become a part of our school. During flex the middle school students participated in various service projects around the building.
We are confirmed to go to the Ark Encounter October 11th! Further information will be sent home in the next couple of weeks. Next week, Thursday, the 7th and 8th graders are heading to Lutheran High School for the Saints for a Day program. Here is the schedule for that day, Saints - 4 - a - Day. Thank you so much to our Special Persons's Day guests; it was such a pleasure having your share our morning today. Thank you also to the students who helped create the wonderful shade structure for the early childhood outdoor classroom; it looks amazing. In science we have started learning about eukaryotic cells (cells with a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles) and there is a large project associated with this concept. Students will create models of a cell that includes all the appropriate structures, functions, and how they compare to either a factory, city, or school. The project sheet is already in each student's folder if you wish to read through the requirements. No due date is set at this time. If there is another donation idea that you would like to see us contribute, please let me know, and we will work out a way to make it happen. I will send home donation envelopes next week for our Yard Work donation, as it got away from me this week. A friendly reminder to all family members of students to leave the two marked parking spaces for All Saints' Fest Parking open. Each year during our annual auction, these two spots are highly sought after and paid for through bidding that ultimately benefits all of the children in our school. If you are interested in one of these annual parking spaces, please plan to attend our auction to bid on this benefit! In the meantime, please be allow those who won this privilege to take full advantage of it. I pray that you all have a blessed weekend!
