Can you believe we are already 2/3 of the way through the school year? Unbelievable! The third trimester officially starts on Monday - a ""fresh" start to finish the year strong. Report cards from the second trimester will be sent home on Friday next week.
This morning the 3rd-8th grade students did some bridge building during Sci-Fest! It was neat to see the creations they were able to come up with in just 25 minutes. And for some of the teams, the bridges held a surprising amount of weight! Be sure to ask your student how they did! In Literature we have started our Journalism unit! We spend some time learning what goes into being a journalist: how to determine what stories to cover, how to cover those stories fairly, what things make a good video report, and anything and everything else that goes into creating broadcast news. Then, we have an actual journalist come in (Nina Criscuolo from WISH TV!) and share with us her experience and how she decides what footage she needs to gather and how to share the story in the most effective way. And then the fun begins - the students develop, write, shoot, and edit their own broadcast news story! We had a great time with this in the class last year and I look forward to seeing what this class creates! Be sure to check RAM NEWS for any other events and school news. Yay for a long weekend! I have very little to share with you all with our short week that we had, but there were still some exciting things!

Another busy week! Basketball and Cheer seasons came to and end early this week, preparations for the play were sprinkled throughout, and the end of the trimester is sneaking up on us (2 weeks!!). But, it was a good week!
The Middle School Drama Night went off without a hitch! All students worked hard to memorize lines, improve on acting skills, design sets and costumes, and put together three great performances. There are plenty of things coming up with the trimester coming to a close very soon, so here are some reminders:
The online clothing store has been updated! Check it out and get some cool new OSLS gear! See the calendar below for some PTL event dates. National Lutheran Schools Week, Pizza Kit fundraiser delivery, basketball games, 8th grade recognition for winter sports, special persons day, basketball tournament, and, I'm sure, more!
With all that being said, I think we had a great week! We started working on the Lutherans for Life essay contest in our Writing Workshop and continued having great conversations while reading The Diary of Anne Frank. Plus, with it being National Lutheran Schools Week there was plenty of extra excitement around the building! Speaking of excitement: 8th GRADE WON PENNY WARS!!! While winning is obviously awesome, the even better thing is that we raised over $1,400 to donate to Sheltering Wings and purchase new playground equipment at school. Just all around an awesome week! Here's to an awesome weekend as well! This week was certainly a busy one. Here are the highlights:
Dates to Remember: January 26th: 5th-8th sing for 8AM church service February 6th: Middle School Drama Night 6:30PM February 13th: PTL Box Top Collection February 14th-17th: No School February 21st: End of Trimester 2 February 24th: PTL Meal Prep/Tupperware event 6PM May 5th: e-learning Day We've started reading through the Diary of Anne Frank in Literature and even though we've only just started, we've already had some great conversations. Even though the Diary of Anne Frank may be familiar to some of you, I would encourage you all you to talk to your kids about what they are reading. Some of the topics that come up can be hard to think about. Anne goes through a lot during her time in hiding. We talk about a lot of those things in class and bring the biblical perspective into thinking about these things; but talking about them as a family would be good!
Reminders:

We all got back into the swing of things quickly and school is back in full force. Projects and papers abound, but the students are handling it all in stride.
The biggest thing to report is on Pizza Sales! Hopefully everyone was able to take advantage of this opportunity and raise some money for their trip. Please remember that all orders and money are due next week Friday (the 17th) and all orders will be delivered to school on the 28th. Please start reminding those who ordered that they need to make arrangements to have their pizza kits picked up or delivered to them before 5:30 that evening. If you have any questions, please let me know! Other reminders:

The first 50 students earning a Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher can qualify for these renewable scholarships when you enroll. If you've been considering Lutheran as a choice for your child, NOW is a great time to start! Christmas Break is finally here! This week has been a busy one with some crazy weather messing with schedules, plenty of basketball and cheerleading, and then, ending with all sorts of Christmas fun!
We had our rescheduled Christmas program this morning and the kids all did wonderfully! If you weren't able to attend, check out the Our Shepherd Lutheran facebook page - we live streamed it and you should still be able to find it. The rest of the day was spent hanging out with our Chapel Buddies, exchanging gifts, playing games, eating food, watching a movie, eating even MORE food, and finally heading to the gym to burn off some of the crazy amounts of Oreo Balls we ate! It was certainly a fun way to celebrate Christmas as a class. Just a few reminder for you:
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Here is an awesome opportunity to work on your writing with other Middle School Students this coming New Year! These weeks leading up to Christmas Break have gone so fast, yet I know we all still can't wait for Christmas to be here! This week has been another busy one with practicing for the Christmas Program to Basketball and Cheerleading to Advent Services and all that on top of normal school things. But, we're still getting things done and staying on top of it all as best we can.
Speaking of staying on top of things, the 8th graders have done a pretty good job as a whole of keeping on top of their homework. The beginning of the trimester took a little adjusting, but getting things turned in on time is becoming more and more of a habit for a lot of them. Just one more week and they can take a break! I don't have much more to report with Mackinaw - just confirming the possibility of the bus and then I'll get final costs out to everyone! But - the pizza fundraiser is upon us! The whole class seems pretty excited about being able to raise money for their trip, so keep encouraging them to talk to people. If you have any questions about that or are unsure of what to do with order forms, please let me know. Upcoming things:
We're at the end of another week, but the beginning of basketball season! With so many of the students being involved with basketball teams or cheerleading, this part of the year definitely feels like it might be the busiest! But, the kids are all handling it in stride and many of them are working hard to stay on top of their homework. Keep encouraging them to stay on task, know their priorities, to reach out to teachers when they need some extra help or time, and to get sleep!
Some reminders of Middle School policies:
Mackinaw Updates: It was brought to my attention that renting 15 passenger vans may be a good travel option for us. I'll be looking into the cost of that and letting you all know what makes the most fiscal sense soon! Upcoming Events:
