Today started with a fire drill that will go down in the books. The planned fire drill did not go as planned when the fire alarm wouldn’t turn off due to a faulty sensor. The students didn’t seem to mind though because they got an extra 45 minutes outside in the beautiful morning weather. Praise God that there was no real emergency and that we had warm weather to enjoy! The Lord must have thought we needed to ease into the morning!
This week in Literature and Tech class the students worked on slides about Helen Keller and did some research on Braile. Slides will be presented on Monday. Next week we will read a biography about Matthew Henson, the first African American to travel to the North Pole. In Math, we are working through a unit on ratios. Please remind your child to work on their spiral math review each night in addition to any other math work they may need to finish up. Spiral review sheets are always on colored paper to make them easy to find. Some parents have asked about wishlist items for the classroom and other ways that they can help. Below are a few times that cannot be found on Amazon but would be very helpful for our classroom:

Three days down- 177 more to go. But who is counting?
I had a great three days getting to know your children. We jumped into a regular class schedule yesterday and today. The students did well transitioning from classroom to classroom and everyone got a 100% on their first memory work of the year. Way to go 6th grade! Things to note about next week: 1. We will be reading about Helen Keller in Literature 2. You will see a weekly spiral review for Math class. Students are expected to complete the Monday column for homework Monday night. 3. Memory work is Baptism Part I. Consider studying a little bit every night. Students can say memory work early but it must be said by Thursday morning. 4. Back-to-School Night is Thursday, August 15th. This night is for you, the parent, to learn about 6th grade. PTL and other groups will present in the Church at 6:45pm. Parents of middle school students will initially meet in the church immediately following PTL and then move to the classrooms after the group session. This session should begin around 7:15pm. 1. An email went home earlier today with details about our Chicago trip. Please email me with any questions. 2. Monday is dine out night at Chipotle in Avon from 4pm - 8pm. Come support OS! 3. If you have not yet returned your spring pictures- please do so ASAP 4. We are done with i-Learn testing! Thank you to Mrs. Alfred for providing the class with amazing snacks throughout the week! 5. Many students have missing work. Missing work must be completed prior to leaving for Chicago on Friday. I will work to update everything over the weekend. 1. Thursday is Mount Olympus Day. Students were given project sheets this week and should have they speech ready for Thursday. Here is a link if you would like to help bring in snacks for our festivities. 2. Mid-term is today. Reports will be emailed on Sunday evening. 3. Kids who were at the track meet today have homework due on Monday. Have your child check weebly for more information. 4. Please return your Spring Picture packet by Friday. 5. 1. We had a great first week back from Spring Break and today we had everyone back in the classroom! 2. We started a Greek Mythology unit in Literature. Next week, students will be assigned a Greek god or goddess (at random) to portray on our Mount Olympus day. See the rubric sheet that will come home next week for more information. Mount Olympus day is scheduled for Tuesday, April 16th. 3. Next week in spelling is unit 27 4. Tonight is "Ladies Night Out" at Sweet M's in Plainfield from 7:30 -9:00pm. This event supports the annual school auction, All Saint's Fest. 5. Thursday is the field trip to the Children's Museum. Your child needs to wear an Our Shepherd shirt, tennis shoes, and bring a lunch. News for 3/15... 1. We will move into Unit 26 in Spelling next week. 2. Freak the Mighty Essays are due next week. Students should shoot for Tuesday, but revisions can be made up to Thursday. 3. Expect a Readworks assignment every day next week. We are gearing up for i-Learn in April. 4. A permission slip for Chicago will be sent home on Monday. Please look for it. Drivers and chaperones need to be solidified before Spring Break. We did some fun pi day activities yesterday. 1. I just realized I did not update Weebly for the homework today. It will be posted tomorrow morning when I am at school. Sorry for the inconvenience. 2. CHICAGO TICKETS HAVE BEEN PURCHASED! City Go Passes were 25% off yesterday so I went ahead and purchased the student and adult tickets at the reduced rate. With this savings, we are only about $100 away from our goal! Any money that is over the class goal with off-set other expenses such as gas. Adults wishing to chaperone should email me. I purchased 6 adult tickets but more can be purchased if need be. So exciting! THE TRIP DATE IS FRIDAY, MAY 10 3. The 6th graders have been working very hard on their math lately. I am very proud of how they work together in groups and are always willing to help each other. A test is scheduled for next week. It will be no earlier than Wednesday. Be watching weebly for the specific day. 4. Important information went home today: Choice and SGO Scholarship papers, a pink flyer about Ladies Night Out, and a reminder about upcoming spring pictures. Be sure to review this paperwork. 1. We had a great lunch and treats to celebrate winning Penny Wars and Jenna's birthday. Thank you to Mr. Lucas for picking up our pizza and to Jenna for bringing in treats. 2. Next week we will begin a new novel, Freak the Mighty. If you would like to read along with us, send me an email and I will send home an extra copy. 3. The end of the 2nd trimester is Tuesday. Report Cards will go home the following week. 4. Third Trimester Memory Work papers were sent home today.
